LG Refrigerator Ice & Frost Buildup? Causes & How to Fix It

Frost coating the freezer's back wall, a sheet of ice under the deli drawer or freezer floor, or a fridge section that turns warm while the freezer still freezes — classic signs the defrost system has stopped doing its job.

Try these quick checks first (free & safe)

  1. Check the door gaskets with a dollar bill: close the door on it and pull — if it slides out with no resistance anywhere along the seal, humid air is leaking in and turning to frost.
  2. Make sure nothing inside is blocking the air vents between the freezer and fridge sections, and that the doors actually close (a protruding drawer or bag is a surprisingly common culprit).
  3. If frost appeared after a power outage or vacation mode, give the fridge 24 hours of normal operation before judging.
  4. Don't chip ice off with a knife or stab at the back wall — punctured evaporator tubing turns a small repair into a sealed-system job.

What actually causes it — from LG technicians

Failed defrost heater, sensor, or fuse

The most common cause. LG refrigerators melt frost off the evaporator several times a day; when the defrost circuit fails, ice accumulates until it blocks airflow and the fridge section goes warm. We test the heater, defrost sensor, and control output on the spot.

Worn or leaking door gasket

A gasket with even a small gap feeds humid Orange County air into the cabinet all day. The frost pattern usually points right at the leak.

Clogged defrost drain

Melt water can't leave, refreezes, and builds a sheet of ice on the freezer floor that eventually leaks onto the kitchen floor. Clearing and treating the drain fixes it.

Stuck air damper

The motorized damper between the freezer and fridge sticks open, over-freezing the fresh-food section and icing the vents.

Ice maker fill valve overfilling

A weeping fill valve sprays water past the ice maker, glazing the ice bin and the freezer wall behind it.

🔧 When it's time to call a pro

Defrost failures are diagnosed by measurement, not guesswork: we test the heater's resistance, the sensor's response, and the control board's defrost output in one visit and carry the common LG defrost parts on the truck. As a factory authorized LG service company, we fix the cause — not just melt the symptom with a hair dryer.

LG Refrigerator Ice & Frost Buildup — FAQ

Can I just unplug the fridge and let the ice melt?+

A full manual defrost (24 hours, doors open, towels down) clears the symptom — but if the defrost circuit has failed, the ice returns within a week or two. Use it as a stopgap to keep food cold, not as the fix.

Why is there ice on the back wall of my LG freezer?+

The evaporator sits behind that wall. Frost there means defrost cycles aren't happening (heater/sensor fault) or humid air is getting in (gasket). Either way it's fixable in one visit, usually without major parts.

Why does water leak onto my floor every few days?+

That's the melted-and-refrozen cycle of a clogged defrost drain: the ice sheet on the freezer floor grows until water finds its way out the door. Clearing the drain and treating it against re-clogging stops the leak for good.
